The story follows a cobblers daughter, Mary Baker who sells leeches on Brighton Peer. She becomes exasperated by her poverty and one night in the cold, pouring rain she crawls to the doorstep of a rich Baron and his wife, The Worralls, to seek refuge. She fools them into believing she is a princess from a far off land. Doctors and Linguists flock to see the exotic princess and are baffled by her foreign tongue, until a portuguese Prince arrives to claim her for his bride, then the fun really begins.
'There once was a girl, Mary Baker
Who turned out to be a right faker,
She went from the poor, to luxuries door
But was scuppered by Billy Greenacre
(The Portuguese Piss Taker)'
