I Can See Clearly Now

Primary - Anti-Smoking

This play covers the topic of smoking cessation and the effects of parents smoking on children. Areas included are:

peer pressure, opinions and facts on smoking.

This is new play that has only recently been developed for Extended Schools Coordinators in Watford and St Albans. The play was well received and is likely to be commissioned for another tour in 2010. It is aimed at year 5 and 6.

The play follows the lives of Sophie and her parents as they struggle to give up smoking. Sophie becomes caught up in the wrong crowd and enticed to smoke but she hates it and wishes she had said ‘no’. Appearances from ‘Lungy 1’ and ‘Lungy 2’ lighten the play whilst also showing the internal effects of smoking.

You've Got A Blue Face

Primary - Anti-Bullying

This play with accompanying workshop follows the story of Faye, Bella and Shona, three young school girls who embark on an exciting trip away with their fellow classmates. Prior to the trip, Bella the bully has been making things very difficult for her shy and quiet classmate Shona and things only seem to get worse as they prepare for their trip away. The play employs effective symbolism in the style of a blue bear, as Bella is made aware of some of her bullying ways. As the play unfolds, things take a nasty turn for the worse and a devastating incident leads everyone examining their own actions.

The play lasts for 40 minutes and is followed by a 20 minute interactive workshop where the audience are encouraged to hot-seat the characters, speak through the actions of what they have just seen and work in small groups in discussing a suitable ending.

The play addresses;
Confidence,
Self-esteem,
Peer pressure,
Facing up to the bullies.

Trashed

Secondary - Binge Drinking

This play was commissioned in 2009 by the South West Essex PCT and HENs worked alongside Brentwood Borough Council and Alcho-help. The play covers the topic binge drinking including: peer pressure, difficulties in moving schools and adapting, parental drinking and relationships.

Aimed at year 9, ‘Trashed’ follows Charlotte’s tale as she moves to a new school and tries to fit in. She misunderstands Jack and Mia’s joke to bring in some alcohol and fast becomes tangled in the web of drinking. She sees herself changing into a person she doesn’t like but the urge to fit in means she is willing to take the risk until one day it goes too far and Mia faces severe consequences.

The play also incorporates elements of film throughout the performance. Forum theatre follows the performance including hot seating as the audience are encouraged to ask the characters questions.

Hitting Home

Secondary - Domestic Violence

‘Hitting Home’ was first commissioned by the Crime and Disorder Partnership in Brentwood Council and HENs closely worked with Basildon Women’s Aid in order to accurately approach the topic of domestic violence.

‘Hitting Home’ follows the story of David and his families move to a new home after escaping the clutches of his violent father. However David struggles to settle in and becomes immersed in his violent computer games. Based on elements from the game ‘Grand Theft Auto’, this play covers the fragility of relationships and how the line between reality and fiction can often become blurred.

The play is aimed at Years 10 and 11. Forum theatre follows the play as the audience is asked to re-write key moments in the play.
